Steelers Over Cards In Superbowl Rematch

August 31, 2010 by Ross Everett

The Pittsburgh Steelers used a 17 point fourth quarter outburst to break open a close game and send the Arizona Cardinals to defeat by a 20-10 score in a NFL preseason rematch of this years Superbowl. The two teams traded first half field goals and played a scoreless third quarter before Pittsburgh turned up the offense late in the game. After scoring only six points in the first three quarters the two teams combined for 24 points in the final period.

NFL bettors who favored the defending Superbowl champions in this matchup cashed their tickets as the Steelers covered as -3 home favorites. The combined 30 points scored stayed UNDER the posted total of 33.

The big catalyst for the Steelers offense was undrafted rookie Issac Redman out of Bowie State. Redman, listed as the Steelers #7 depth chart running back scored two rushing touchdowns in the decisive fourth quarter run. After the game, he said that hee knew that he had to take advantage of the opportunities to demonstrate his skills in a game situation:

“This team prides itself on being able to find those free agents that are capable of playing. Hopefully I can be that next free agent. I knew I had to make an impression, or I might not even make it to the first preseason game.”

Both teams played their starting quarterbacks for only two offensive series. The Steelers Ben Roethlisberger was generally happy about his performance:

“Overall, without looking at film, I think it was OK. I think we had a couple of plays with a few breakdowns, but it just felt good to go against somebody other than your own guys.”

Arizonas Kurt Warner was happy with his performance, but noted that the first preseason game had come up on him quickly:

“I felt like we moved the ball and did what we wanted to. It seems like this game came pretty quick. When we were in the locker room, we were thinking, `Man, it is here already.’ ”

The star receivers for each team also saw limited playing time, with Arizonas Larry Fitzgerald and Pittsburghs Superbowl MVP Santonio Holmes each catching a single pass in a couple of series of action.

Pittsburgh will open the NFL regular season on Thursday, September 10th as they host the Tennessee Titans. Arizona will kick of their campaign on Sunday, September 13th at home against the San Francisco 49ers.

Giants Rip Hapless Bucs To Remain Undefeated

The New York Giants used a potent ground attack and a suffocating defense to shut out the host Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-0 on Sunday. The Giants amassed 397 total yards including 226 on the ground, while the defense held Tampa to 86 yards of total offense and five first downs. The Giants improved to 3-0 on the season, while Tampa dropped to 0-3 and lost for the seventh straight time dating back to last season.

The Giants easily covered as -6 road favorites, improving their ATS mark to 3-0 on the season as well. The Buccaneers, meanwhile, are 0-3 both straight up and against the spread. The 24 points went well UNDER the posted total of 46.

After the contest Giants coach Tom Coughlin talked about his teams dual priorities:

“We had a game in which we didn’t play very well against the run, so we knew that we would be tested and we would have to rise up and do a better job there. We also knew we needed to rush the ball better than we had, so we did a pretty good job with that.”

Over in the Bucs locker room, head coach Raheem Morris-who is still looking for his first victory at the helm of a NFL team”had little positive to say about his teams performance:

“They beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. … It wasn’t even close.”

“We have no choice but to get better than this performance. You get five first downs and you’re 0-for-9 on third down. You have 86 yards total offense. It was completely disastrous.”

Giants running back Brandon Jacobs gave much of the credit for the victory to his defense:

“Our defense was very, very, very impressive. I knew they would come out with a chip on their shoulder.”

Impressive enough to leave Bucs receiver Michael Clayton hanging his head and looking for answers:

“It was disappointing, a little bit embarrassing. We have to play better.”

The Giants will play at Kansas City this Sunday as they try to maintain their unbeaten 2009 regular season record. New York is a -9 road favorite with the total set at 42. Theyll host the Oakland Raiders the following Sunday before playing at New Orleans on October 18. Tampa Bay will play their next two games on the road, beginning this weekend against the Washington Redskins. The Redskins are -7 home favorites with the total set at 37.

MMA Flashback: Bunny Beatdown As Strikeforce Heads To The Playboy Mansion

Hugh Hefner is really starting to show his age, but there he was at cageside wearing his trademark pajamas and bathrobe. Had he bothered to look up every now and then he would have enjoyed a spirited night of fighting that may have been short on significant matchups but wasnt lacking for entertainment value.

STRIKEFORCE had to scramble on this show, as injuries changed the main event several times. It was initially a non-title matchup between former UFC bad boy Renato Babalu Sobral and promotion light heavyweight champion Bobby Southworth. Southworth was the first to be pulled from the card due to injury, and was replaced by Anthony Ruiz. Then Sobral suffered an injury that necessitated *his* removal from the card. He was replaced by Trevor Prangley, who has been with a number of organizations and was formerly the middleweight champion of the ill fated BoDog Fight promotion.

The Prangley/Ruiz contest was a one sided affair, with the South African using his strength to repeatedly takedown his opponent and control him on the ground. Ruiz had the edge in the standup game, but Prangley avoided trouble by keeping the fight where he wanted it en route to a unanimous decision victory. With the frequent changes this bout was moved well down on the card and aired third on the televised portion of the event.

The main event was nominally the US debut of World Victory Roads Kazuo Misaki aka The Grabaka Hitman taking on well traveled veteran Joe Riggs. After an uneventful first round, the second round brought fireworks. Riggs struck first, flooring Misaski early in the round with a short left hook. It was what could most properly be called a flash knockdown that in no way hurt the Japanese fighter. In fact, he basically somersaulted back to a standing position and responded in kind with a straight right hand that sent Riggs to the canvas. Josh Rosenthal quickly waved off the fight awarding Misaki the TKO victory.

After the stoppage, Riggs immediately jumped to his feet in protest. The crux of his argument was that he was defending himself and that Misakis blows were doing little damage. He did have something of a case, as the replay showed that he was covered up and absorbing most of the blows to his gloves. With the safety of the fighters always the top priority, our conclusion was that the stoppage was legit. At the same time, however, you certainly cant blame Riggs for not being happy with it.

Earlier in evening, STRIKEFORCE lightweight champion Josh Punk Thompson made short work of a game but overmatched opponent in Ashe Bowman. Bowman was making a huge step up in class here, and was clearly nervous at the prospect of facing such a high profile opponent. Thompson just measured Bowman for the first minute of the fight, scoring with low kicks to the leg. To his credit, Bowman figured that he had to take the fight to the champion and went on the attack. Thompson then put on a counterpunching clinic nailing Bowman with a straight right followed by a flurry of uncontested punches that sent the young fighter to the canvas for a quick stoppage.

The most impressive submission of the night was courtesy of PRIDE vet Mitsuhiro The Endless Fighter Ishida. Justin Wilcox was the unlucky recipient on a beautiful submission when he attempted to take Ishida down and almost too fast to see the Japanese fighter slapped on an armbar for the quick tapout.

How To Get The Most Value From A Meal Delivery Service

August 29, 2010 by Cassandra Lee

Having chef prepared meals delivered to your home is becoming a very popular service for time-starved couples and gift givers for any occasion. However, how do you know which meal delivery service offers the menu you want at the best value? As a Human Resources executive for over twenty years, part of my job was buying corporate gifts, and sending prepared meals was one of my favorite choices. Here are some tips I have learned over the years.

It takes just a little bit of investigative research to be a smart shopper. Normally, you can compare costs just by visiting different stores. That is not so easy when comparing meal delivery services. A meal at one service can be cheaper than the same meal at another service, but the size of the portion can be much smaller. I have seen Salmon, for example, be sold in portion sizes as small as 3 ounces and has large as 8 ounces. My first tip when comparing services is price per portion size.

Not everyone will want to have their meal reheated in the same manner. This is another factor to consider when shopping for a meal delivery service. Reheating options include the microwave, the oven, or in a pot of hot water. Not all of these reheating methods work best for the meal you have chosen. Be sure to review the company’s recommendations for reheating to make your menu match the reheating method of your choice.

Let’s say you have a chef prepared meal service in mind. A great way to do a quality and value check on a company, is to search for any consumer reviews that may be posted on the Internet. I found a website that specializes in just the prepared meal delivery business. Imagine that! This website is a tremendous resource for anyone that buys, or is thinking about having prepared meals delivered to their door, or sent as a gift to someone else. The website is called Prepared-Meal-Delivery-Reviews.com.

Prepared-Meal-Delivery-Reviews.com provides information on all the major meal delivery services that deliver in a large regional area, or nationwide. Some food companies include NutriSystem, Chef’s Diet, Diets to Go, Home Bistro, eDiets, crabcakes.com, Gourmet Station, and so many others. The best part of this website is that people who buy these prepared meals, come back and post their reviews and recommendations on the experiences they have had with the companies’ meals.

The website is very easy to navigate and easy to use. It is set up to be the one stop for everything dealing with prepared frozen foods. There are customer reviews to help others find what they need or what to stay away from. Discount Coupon codes are available to help the budget minded get more value for their dollar. Some of these could include free shipping, which is a $35 savings, or more, in the meal delivery service business. Shipping frozen meals on dry ice in special packaging can be expensive.

Meal delivery services are great for sending prepared meals to yourself or as a gift to someone else. Their reheating convenience help us with our busy schedules, and nutritional menus can help manage diabetes, lose weight, or stay on low sodium diet plans. But like any good restaurant, it is a good idea to listen to what others have to say about their dining experiences. Using discount coupons and special offers, which can translate to $60 savings or more, adds immediate value to your order.

Patriots’ Offensive Balance Too Much For Falcons

August 28, 2010 by Ross Everett

After an erratic start to the 2009 NFL regular season, the New England Patriots have finally found some balance to their offense. Tom Brady had carried all of the weight in the Pats first two regular season games due to their one dimensional offense, but on Sunday he received some long overdue help from running back Fred Taylor who ran for 105 yards. As a result, the Patriots dominated the time of possession battle holding onto the ball for nearly 40 minutes en route to a 26-10 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Both teams are now 2-1 on the season.

NFL betting enthusiasts who backed the Patriots as -4 home favorites cashed their tickets with the 16 point victory. It was New Englands first ATS triumph of the season, while Atlanta lost to the money for the first time in the 2009 campaign. The 36 combined points scored went UNDER the total of 45. Both teams have played two of their three games UNDER the total so far this season.

Running back Taylor talked about the importance of a balanced offense in his postgame interview:

“You want to be balanced going into games, but some situations don’t allow for it. You want to establish that momentum and look over across the ball and see the frustration in the defensive guys’ eyes.”

New England was also very effective on defense, holding the Falcons Tony Gonzalez to one catch early in the fourth quarter. An obviously frustrated Gonzalez talked about the Patriots defensive scheme after the game:

“They did the same thing they always do to me, ‘bracket coverage. If I get single coverage I am going to make them pay for it eventually.”

New England safety Brandon McGowan joked that the plan was to hold Gonzalez without any catches:

“The plan was for him to not have any catches and he had one so obviously the plan failed.”

Patriots running back Sammy Morris said it was simply a matter of making plays:

“We were making plays in the second half we weren’t making in the previous weeks. It was directly related to making the third-and-shorts and fourth-and-shorts. The offense is able to stay on the field and you’re able to get more things accomplished.”

The Falcons will enjoy a bye weekend before returning to action on the road against the San Francisco 49ers on October 11th. Theyll host the Chicago Bears the following Sunday before playing the Cowboys at Dallas. New England will host the Baltimore Ravens this Sunday. New England will play at Denver the following weekend before returning home to take on the Tennessee Titans.

Eskimos Pull Out Victory Over TigerCats In CFL Thriller

August 28, 2010 by Ross Everett

The Edmonton Eskimos showed a flair for the dramatic in Saturday night CFL action. Trailing 30-21 late in the fourth, Edmonton came all the way back to defeat the visiting Hamilton Tiger Cats 31-30. Noel Prefontaine kicked a clutch 48 yard field goal in the final minute to provide the margin of victory.

Despite the exciting finish to the game, CFL bettors who backed the Eskimos were left holding losing tickets. Hamilton easily covered the spread as +7 road underdogs, improving to 5-3 against the number while Edmonton dropped to 3-5. The 61 points scored put the game OVER the posted total of 54. It was Hamiltons second straight OVER, but only their third of the season against five UNDER games. Edmonton also has a 5-3 O/U tally on the CFL season.

The Eskimos Arkee Whitlock was the big catalyst on offense, scoring three touchdowns including an important one late in the game to cut the Edmonton deficit to three. Edmonton QB Ricky Ray also enjoyed a productive game, amassing 347 yards on 25 of 33 passing.

Hamilton also put up good offensive numbers, though QB Kevin Glenn did throw two interceptions. Glenn finished with 326 yards on 22 of 39 passing with three touchdowns. The Ti-Cats running backs also fumbled the ball twice, giving the Esks a 4-1 turnover advantage that went a long way to determining the outcome of the game. Turnovers are as costly in the CFL as in the NFL, and you can’t win football games if you don’t take care of the ball.

Edmonton is now in sole possession of first place in the CFL West with a 5-3 record, two points ahead of Saskatchewan and Calgary. Hamilton is in second place in the CFL East, though are quickly losing sight of the leagues top team. The Montreal Alouettes are threatening to run away with the division, leading Hamilton by six points with a 7-1 mark. Making that margin even more impressive is the fact that the Alouettes were idle this weekend. Unless Montreal suffers an injury to key personnel, they may be hard to catch.

Both teams will be in action on September 7th, as each faces their provincial rival in a traditional Labour Day battle. Edmonton will play at Calgary, while Hamilton will host the Toronto Argonauts. Both sets of rivals will rematch at the others home field just four days later. Labour Day is a traditional football day in Canada, and the CFL celebrates the occasion by showcasing the league’s top rivalries.

How To Choose A Brown Leather Briefcase

August 26, 2010 by Kara T. Fox

A brown leather briefcase is a sound investment for a business wardrobe. It goes with most color combinations and expresses classic style. As well as looking great, this accessory can help you to be more efficient and productive at work by keeping your organized. Simply put, a briefcase can deliver both great design and practicality. The following suggestions show what you should be looking for when shopping for leather briefcases.

Take a few minutes to consider the circumstances in which you will be using the case. For instance, will you use it daily, weekly or just occasionally? Will you use it for travel? The way you work affects the type you should buy. To learn more about the features that briefcases offer and how they can be useful to you, keep reading.

When it comes to briefcases, a simple, clean design that is not bulky is what many customers are looking for. However, it should also have loads of room for belongings. Some clever designers have combined plenty of storage room with compact dimensions.

Give some thought to what items you use most, such as mobile phones, note books and pagers. Also, consider what items in your case will be used the least. Choose a briefcase that reflects this – for instance, a case that has small outside pockets for phones and gadgets as well as internal compartments for files could be ideal.

Outside pockets for reading materials, such as newspapers, books and magazines, are handy for time spent waiting at airports. An internal compartment which is divided in two means that you can sort papers and files, keeping you organized. If, like many professionals, you often carry a laptop, choose an accessory with a padded laptop sleeve. Another useful feature is an internal zipper pocket which provides hidden storage for small valuables.

Chances are, you will be using your briefcase on a regular basis. Therefore, it is especially important to choose a design that is comfortable to use. A shock absorbing shoulder strap that does not slip can make a big difference to comfort.

Finally, look for a leather briefcase that fits into your lifestyle. For instance, if you travel by plane a lot, you will appreciate a compact size that can easily stored in an overhead compartment. You can even find types that include zipper attachments so that they can piggy back on other rolling suitcases and luggage. It’s easy to see that a brown leather briefcase is a worthwhile investment, not only for style but for practical use.

Argos’ Home Woes Continue In CFL Loss To Stampeders

August 24, 2010 by Ross Everett

Judy Garland famously said in her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz that theres no place like home. The Toronto Argonauts would likely take issue with that sentiment. On Friday night, the Argos lost a close one to the Calgary Stampeders at the Rogers Centre by a final score of 23-20.

Calgary hasnt done well in Toronto in recent years, and Henry Burris was happy with the victory despite the Argos recent struggles on their own field:

“Rogers Centre has never been a fun place for us to play. We’ve had some tough games here against some hard-hitting Argos teams. This team has been through a lot and with the belief we have in one another, we were able to fight back and respond when it really counted.”

Argos coach Bart Andrus kept the offense on the field for a last ditch effort to score a touchdown rather than go for the tie with a long field goal.

Placekicker Justin Medlock had missed a 57 yard kick earlier this season”his only miss of the year. Andrus is already hearing some criticism of this decision, and he addressed it after the game:

“I’ll take the heat on the call to not kick the field goal. The distance bothered me. That was my worry. The 57-yarder against Winnipeg came with the roof open. I just wasn’t comfortable with it.”

Medlock all but second guessed his coach when asked about the potential game tying field goal try that he didnt get to make:

“I definitely thought I could’ve made it but never got the chance. Maybe I should’ve run on to the field. I hit the crossbar in practice from 60 yards out.”

Calgary has won both games against Toronto this season, beating the Argos 44-9 at McMahon Stadium earlier this season. After the contest, Stamps coach/GM John Hufnagel indicated his pleasure with his teams effort:

“If it was going to be a close game I wanted our defence on the field at the end to protect the lead and that’s what happened. I think it’s really a big step for this football team. I’m very pleased with the defence, I’m very pleased with the offence in the second half when they had to answer points . . . we got the momentum back each and every time.”

Next up , Calgary will host Edmonton on Labour Day, and the teams will rematch in Edmonton four days later. Toronto and Hamilton will go at it in their traditional Labour Day tilt, with the first game of the set at Hamilton and the rematch back at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Aoki Submits Alverez To Make Claim For Lightweight MMA Supremacy

August 21, 2010 by Ross Everett

In one of the highlight matches of the DREAM/K-1 Fields Dynamite! New Years Eve megacard, Japanese submission machine Shinya Aoki used a heel hook to submit a top notch opponent in Eddie Alverez at 1:32 of the first round. With the victory, Aoki sets up a rematch against reigning DREAM lightweight champion Joachim Hansen and bolsters his claim as the best lightweight fighter in the world.

When the Aoki/Alverez fight was first announced, there was some speculation that Aoki had chosen one of the worst possible stylistic matchups for him. A product of tough Kensington neighborhood in Philadelphia, he grew up not far from where much of the exterior scenes were shot for the first Rocky movie. With this sort of toughness and heart bred into him, and a solid background in boxing and amateur wrestling hes become one of the best all round fighters in MMA and among the best in the world at the weight.

Alverez received an enthusiastic reaction from the fans in Tokyo’s Saitama Super Arena as he made his way to the ring on New Years Eve”his run to the DREAM lightweight finals and particularly the epic battle with Hansen has made him a highly respected and popular fighter in Japan. The reaction he received was nothing like Aoki’s, however, who was cheered like a rock star as he bounced to the ring to his trademark theme song Baka Survivor.

As the two fighters stood for referee instructions, it was striking how much taller and rangier Aoki was than his opponent. Aoki is listed at 511, Alverez at 58 but the visual difference suggests that there’s much more than a three inch height advantage in favor of Aoki.

For the first minute of the match, it appeared that a slow feeling out process was underway. Alverez was the aggressor for most of the first minute, coming forward while using his jab as a range finder.

What happened next can only be described as unbelievable”the sequence started when Aoki grabbed Alverez’s ankle after a kick and appeared to go for what looked like a standing anklelock submission. Alverez managed to extricate his ankle and seeing that Aoki was off balance took the opportunity to go for his own takedown with a move that looked more like a judo throw than a traditional wrestling move. Against 99.9% of the other fighters in the world, Alverez would have ended up on top and started working in full or half guard.

When Alverez landed, however, Aoki wasn’t there. In one single, almost gravity defying motion he’d used the momentum from the takedown to shoot under Alverez and grab his leg. Alverez struggled briefly, but Aoki quickly cinched in a painful heel hook. Eventually, Alverez was forced to tap.

Ever the gentleman, Aoki dropped to the canvas after the tapout to check on his opponents condition than started his postfight celebration. He quickly addressed the crowd in Japanese to an enthusiastic response before heading to the back.

One superlative that is no longer in dispute is Shinya Aoki’s status as the best submission artist in mixed martial arts. There’s simply no one else like him in the sport”theres plenty of good, solid submission based fighters but Aoki elevates it into an art form. Hes got the technical background to be sure, but what elevates him above the rest is his amazing ability at improvisation. This makes it downright impossible to adequately prepare to fight him, as Alverez discovered. Even if an opponent has mastered all of the defenses and counters for every known submission technique, there’s no way to defend someone who can make up effective submission moves during a fight.

Vikings, Favre Hold Off Ravens To Remain Undefeated

August 21, 2010 by Ross Everett

The Minnesota Vikings’ decision to facilitate Brett Favre’s latest ‘unretirement’ is looking better and better with each passing week. This past Sunday, Favre’s charges moved to 6-0 on the season with a wild 33-31 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens posted 21 fourth quarter points to charge back and claim the lead late, but Favre led a rally to set up place kicker Ryan Longwell’s 31 yard game winning field goal. Baltimore evened their record at 3-3 on the season with the loss.

Minnesota has been one of the surprise teams of the season, and that fact has also enriched those who bet on NFL football. They didn’t get the money on this occasion, however, as the Ravens took the cheese as a +3 road underdog. Still, it was only the Vikings’ second loss of the year against the NFL pointspread (4-2) while Baltimore has also been solid against the number with a 4-2 mark. The cover broke a two game ATS losing streak for the Ravens. The 64 combined points soared OVER the posted total of 45′.

Baltimore QB Joe Flacco got the Ravens in range for a last second game winning field goal, but Steven Hauschka’s 44 yard try went wide left. After the game, he took his miss hard:

“It’s tough for me. I feel like I let them down. That’s something I have to live with.”

Ravens’ running back Ray Rice disputed Hauschka’s self anointed scapegoat status:

“We didn’t lose that game because of Hauschka’s miss. If we start fast and put points on the board, our defense starts fast, I think the game is a totally different outcome. But that’s what happens when you play against great teams.”

Flacco praised his team for fighting back from a 27-10 fourth quarter deficit:

“We realize what kind of fighters we have in our locker room and that’s what we’re going to use the rest of the year. I think we were 3-3 last year, not that that matters, but we can overcome anything.”

Ray Lewis concurred with his quarterback’s comments:

“Every game has been a game of inches. But for me, being in this business for so long, it just speaks volumes for our team in the way we fight, regardless of the circumstance we’ve been put in.”

The Vikings now face arguably their toughest scheduling stretch of the season, beginning with a trip to the ‘Steel City’ for a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Vikings are a +4 road underdog with the total set at 45. The following week Minnesota heads to Green Bay for what is sure to be an emotional return for Favre. The Ravens will face another undefeated team after a bye week, hosting the Denver Broncos on November 1.
