Study abroad programs are a great way to enrich a student’s educational experience. Seeing new places and learning about unknown cultures is a great way to add to the experiences that studying abroad provides. It’s important to consider international student health insurance to protect students against unexpected illness or injury prior to leaving for a study abroad destination.

Students can be at a higher risk for emergencies when they are traveling overseas, increasing the importance of international student insurance coverage. Being in a new environment with unknown sanitation conditions, different foods, and dangerous insects can make many students more susceptible to illness or injury.

What many students don’t realize, however, is that the insurance coverage they have in their home country may not cover them while traveling internationally. Being away from their families in an unfamiliar environment can be extremely stressful when one is injured or becomes ill. Purchasing an international student health insurance plan before the trip can save money and stress in the event of an emergency.

Typical international student health insurance plans cover emergency care for injuries or illnesses that occur when the student is in a different country. These plans usually offer coverage for hospital stays, prescriptions and any medically necessary treatments. Some plans also include coverage for costs that are incurred as a result of having to return home from a trip early.

It’s critical to consider everything that you need when preparing for a study abroad program, including insurance and emergency contact info. As reported by the Center for Disease Control, all students should be prepared with their current vaccination record, emergency contact information and any prescriptions that are required prior to leaving for their destination.

Students should also prepare or purchase a first aid kit in addition to purchasing study abroad insurance, including items like hand sanitizer, bandages and everyday first aid items.

When you are traveling overseas, the only way to protect yourself is to purchase international student insurance. Any illness or injury can be excessively stressful when a student is away from home. You and your family can be prepared by having insurance and can feel confident that you will be taken care of should an emergency situation occur.

If you are planning to participate in a study abroad program, be sure to include purchasing international student health insurance in your plans. Doing so will allow you to relax and get the most out of your experience, without having to worry about the unexpected.
